This page is a part of a much larger website : Treasures of the Internet. Please click on Treasures of the Internet, if you do not see the logo of "Treasures of the Internet" and the A-Z navigation links at the very top. You should see also the A-Z navigation links, specific for this section. Otherwise, click on the logo, for this section. If this is your first visit, please read navigating this site.

Treasures of the Internet
Welcome to the Reference Desk section of the Untitled Treasures of the Internet .
  • Do you want to find out the most precise (official) time, for your area?
  • Are you interested to know the most reliable estimate of the population of the world, at the moment?
  • Who is the current Prime Minister of Albania?
  • Etc., etc., etc.

If these are what you are looking for, you came to the correct place. Well, we will not give you the time, but point you to the most reliable source(s) of time -- good enough so that the time provided by source(s) we provide you is used to synchronized clocks in the world. How is that for precision?

Sure! You can get information for such things in many places; but the first thing that you should ask is: How reliable is the information?

Our goal here is to provide you with the most reliable* sources of information. Thus, whenever possible, we focused linking sites from non-commercial sources -- especially those from academic, government, research institutions, official agencies and organizations -- that were mandated to perform specific activities or objectives.

For example, the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST), because of its focus would be the most suited for data about Fundamental Physical Constants or the The Official United States Time. Similarly, data from the US Bureau of Census, International Data Base (IDB) or the United Nations Statistics Division were relied upon for many of the data for population demographics.

Because of the aforementioned goal and priority, the links included in each topic were not in alphabetical order. Neither was there any effort to be comprehensive. However, we included the compiled databases from:
and from other pertinent directories, to give you a chance to explore and consider other alternative sources.

The Reference Desk section is a companion to the main section of Untitled Treasures of the Internet . Thus, there will be some redundancy of links from one site to the other, and to a certain extent, the other major subsites, shown on the left side. However, as the name implies, the Reference Desk section includes mainly links that are intended to be used for "quick reference" topics, e.g., maps, dictionaries, "heads of states", embassy address, capital city, population, currency conversion, ZIP codes, etc.

For more detailed analysis or broad topics, e.g., African studies, country profile, demographic trends, history, art, etc., either visit the main A-Z navigation links (shown at the very top) or the "archives and directories" that will be created in the future.

For the more especialized topics, such as health topics, AIDS, Cancer, hazardous chemicals, etc., please visit the specific subsections, shown on the left navigation links. These are included as links also in the top most A-Z navigation links. [They will be included here also in the Reference Desk if the Untitled Treasures of the Internet already has a systematic and significant compilation of links for the topic.]

We do hope you understand what we are trying to do here, and we encourage you to join us and volunteer to help build this page. Thanks for visiting with us.

N.B. *The above policies and criteria will be relaxed a bit in certain areas, for example those that deal with entertainment.
