Introduction

The Nutrition and Metabolism website is a database directory that includes internet links to topics about food, diet, weight control and exercise, foodborne diseases, illnesses and their causative agents, diseases caused by metabolic malfunctions (e.g., diabetes) or aggravated by diet practices (e.g., cardiovascular diseases), as well as nutrition and metabolism related topics like antibiotic resistance, food irradiation, organic farming, genetically manufactured organisms (GMOs), and others related to food production, processsing & technology. Major topics, like "Bacteria, Diseases and Infections", are placed as separate sections (identified in bold red).

Because of the serious consequences of these subjects on human nutrition and health, the sources of information will not be comprehensive. Instead, the focus are on links coming from the major biomedical research and educational institutions, and government agencies involved in research and regulation. Special emphasis are given on information databases that are updated regularly1 and from non-commercial sources.

In case you do not find what you are looking for among the various topics included in the A to Z navigation links above and the other related sites (see left navigation links), the Search section in this website provides search engines and directories that are more specific for the health and biomedical sciences. Some of these search engines and directories included information databases that were prepared specifically for laypeople as well as for physicians and scientists.

Use the "A to Z navigation links" above, preceded by "NM", as well as the major headings on the left side to look for specific topics about Nutrition and Metabolism. Other sections in this and the related sites may have their own "A to Z navigation links". Be sure you are using the correct one when navigating these sites. [Click on the logo at the top or the appropriate link (see left navigation links) to get the proper "A to Z navigation links".]

    Notes and Footnotes:
1The main headings included here were based mainly on the Health Topics database of the Medline Plus from the NIH Health Information Index, as well as those from the Untitled Center for Disease Control and Prevention because of the comprehensiveness of the topics included. More important, these information databases are updated regularly by authoritative sources from the foremost agencies involved in specific health research and clinical trials.

Nutrition and metabolism topics from other sources are also integrated. Please refer to the references cited in each section.
