  • AIDS cases among different age groups. Untitled The Table and Figures 1 & 2 below show that HIV infection and AIDS disproportionately affect those in the 25-44 year old age group; affecting mostly men (see Figure). Visit the different subsections below for overviews and pictographic presentation of AIDS in the different age group brackets.
    It should be noted that there are a significant proportion of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) well above 45 years old, including a sizable population of senior citizens. The population of PLWHA >45 yo is even much greater than the combined population of AIDS cases among children and adolescents (examine Table and Figures 1 & 2). A great proportion of the older population living with HIV/AIDS were a result of earlier HIV infection (due to long term incubation before the progression to full-blown AIDS). Many are long-term survivors who have managed the disease through aggressive antiretroviral therapy and management of AIDS-related opportunistic infections. However, a significant proportion are new cases of HIV infection among the elderly (see Figure 2).
