Untitled AIDS among Adolescents (US). While the rate of HIV infection, new cases of AIDS and AIDs deaths have decreased dramatically since 1993 and 1995 , respectively, the rate of decrease have levelled off since 1998. [Visit AIDS trends in the US.] More alarming is the resurgence of HIV infection among younger people increasing the possibility of a "second wave" of an AIDS epidemic in the United States. A similar trend in AIDS resurgence among younger people has been observed in other Western countries, including Canada and the United Kingdom.

In 2000, confidential studies conducted by 32 states, Guam and the Virgin Islands provide a more recent perspective of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States among young adults and adolescents. Figures 1 and 2 (below) reveal a similar pattern of HIV infection and AIDS among males and females. The ratio of HIV infection and AIDS cases is higher among adolescent (13-19 yo) females than males. The proportion increase among males (relative to females) at the older age range.

Figure 3 reflects a general trend in the AIDS epidemic in the United States, disproportionately affecting ethnic minorities, especially African-Americans and Hispanics.
