In 2000, confidential studies conducted by 32 states, Guam and the Virgin Islands provide a more recent perspective of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States among young adults and adolescents. Figures 1 and 2 (below) reveal a similar pattern of HIV infection and AIDS among males and females. The ratio of HIV infection and AIDS cases is higher among adolescent (13-19 yo) females than males. The proportion increase among males (relative to females) at the older age range. Figure 3 reflects a general trend in the AIDS epidemic in the United States, disproportionately affecting ethnic minorities, especially African-Americans and Hispanics. Visit the special section on HIV/AIDS Surveillance in Adolescents for more comparative pictographic presentations of HIV infection and AIDS among adolescents and other age groups, gender and ethnic groups.
