AIDS among White Americans. The dramatic decline in AIDS deaths in the United States came largely from a significant drop in HIV infection and new AIDS cases among "White Americans" (see Fig. 1 below, as well as in Trends and Race).
Figure 1.
Untitled
Untitled
The majority of cases of AIDS reported among "White Americans" have been mainly among men who have sex with men (MSM); a distant second was through injection drug use (IDU) and a combination of the two (MSM-IDU). View

for a tabulated summary of the major modes of HIV infection among "White Americans".
Until 1995, "White Americans" ranked first in the absolute number of new AIDS cases and AIDS deaths (see Figure 1 above) but were soon surpassed by African Americans in new AIDS cases after 1995, and AIDS death thereafter (see Figure 1 above).

While White Americans rank second in terms of the actual number of AIDS cases and deaths (see Figures 1 above & 2 ), the ranking changes significantly when the values are normalized relative to the population of the major ethnic groups in the US, using population data from the

US Bureau of Census
(see Figure 3 below).
Upon normalization with respect to their ethnic populations, the % AIDS cases among "White Ameriicans" were higher, on a year-to-year basis, than those observed among "Asian-Americans & Pacific Islanders", Native Americans but surpassed by a wide margin by both African-Americans and Hispanics (see Figure 3 below).

Annual reported AIDS cases (1990-2000) of the major ethnic groups in the United States (US), expressed as percent (%) AIDS cases relative to the corresponding population of an ethnic group in a given year. The "open square" line graph, represents the percentage (%) of the total US AIDS cases relative to the total US population in a given year.

The percent (%) annual AIDS deaths relative to the population of White Americans was about 0.011% at its peak in 1995 and about 0.002% in 1999.
These values are slightly higher compared with those observed among "Asian-Americans & Pacific Islanders" (about 0.004% at its peak in 1995 and about 0.001% in 1999), or "American-Indians and Native Alaskans" (< 0.009% at its peak in 1995 and < 0.003% in 1999). They are lower compared with the % AIDS deaths for the entire US population (about 0.018% at its peak in 1995 and about 0.006% in 1999). They are even much lower than those observed among African-Americans (about 0.058% at its peak in 1995 and about 0.023% in 1999) and Hispanics (about 0.032% at its peak in 1993 and about 0.009% in 1999).
