Untitled AIDS among American Indians and Native Alaskans. The majority of cases of AIDS reported among "American Indians and Native Alaskans" have been among men who have sex with men (MSM), through injection drug use (IDU) and a combination of the two (MSM-IDU). View AIDS Cases in Adults and Adolescents by Exposure Category and Race/Ethnicity, Reported through 1999 (US)36 for a tabulated summary of the major modes of HIV infection among "American Indians and Native Alaskans".

As ethnic groups, neither the American Indians nor Native Alaskans contribute significantly to the total AIDS cases or AIDS deaths in the United States (revisit the figure in Untitled Race to compare AIDS among American Indians and Native Alaskans with other ethnic groups in the US). The "y-scale" of the figure shown below was "magnified" to be able to observe the trend of the "flat line" graph (shown in the figure in Untitled Race ) for AIDS deaths among American Indians and Native Alaskans. Untitled Compare the figure above (showing AIDS deaths) with AIDS cases among "American-Indians and Native Alaskans" and "Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders"

In the figure shown above, the actual number of AIDS deaths cases are lower among "American Indians & Native Alaskans" compared "Asian-Americans & Pacific Islanders". However, the combined populations of the "American-Indians and Native Alaskans" were 4-5 fold less than those of the "Asian-Americans & Pacific Islanders" during 1981-2000 ( Untitled US Bureau of Census ). Thus, the values for AIDS cases were normalized relative to the population of the major ethnic groups in the US, using population data from the Untitled US Bureau of Census .

Upon normalization with respect to their ethnic populations, the % AIDS cases among "American-Indians and Native Alaskans" were higher, on a year-to-year basis, than those observed among "Asian-Americans & Pacific Islanders" (see "bottom figure" of the figure shown below). Overall however, AIDS cases and AIDS deaths among "American-Indians and Native Alaskans" and "Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders" are very much lower than the comparable values observed among other major ethnic groups in the United States.

Untitled The percent (%) annual AIDS deaths relative to the population of "American-Indians and Native Alaskans" in the US is < 0.009% at its peak in 1995 and < 0.003% in 1999. These values are slightly higher compared with those observed among "Asian-Americans & Pacific Islanders" (about 0.004% at its peak in 1995 and about 0.001% in 1999), or comparable with those among Whites (about 0.011% at its peak in 1995 and about 0.002% in 1999). They are very lower compared with the % AIDS deaths for the entire US population (about 0.018% at its peak in 1995 and about 0.006% in 1999). They are even much lower than those observed among African-Americans (about 0.058% at its peak in 1995 and about 0.023% in 1999), Hispanics (about 0.032% at its peak in 1993 and about 0.009% in 1999).   • Unless otherwise noted, the figures with the CDC logo were prepared by the Untitled Divisions of HIV/AIDS Prevention . All others were prepared specifically for the Untitled AIDS Primer website. The original data used for the latter figures were based from year-end annual HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report prepared by Untitled Divisions of HIV/AIDS Prevention . Note that some of the AIDS incidence cases presented in the figures by the Untitled Divisions of HIV/AIDS Prevention were based from quarterly reports rather than the year-end annual used in the figures prepared specifically for Untitled AIDS Primer . These account for possible slight discrepancies in the magnitude of the "y-scale" between the figures prepared specifically for Untitled AIDS Primer and those prepared by the Untitled Divisions of HIV/AIDS Prevention .
