    +RRank -- refers to the relative rank of the country in terms of the prevalence of AIDS with respect to the adult population.

    Except for a few other countries in the Horn of Africa ( Untitled Ethiopia , Djibouti), Asia (Cambodia), Caribbean (Haiti), and the Bahamas; all the other countries most affected by HIV/AIDS are in Sub-Saharan Africa. [Click on the underlined country links on the table for AIDS databases in the specific countries.]

    Other large countries have high absolute numbers of people living with HIV/ AIDS (PLWHA) but are not included in the table because as a relative % of population, the prevalence is still "relatively low" in these countries. India, for exampple, has almost 3.7 million PLWHA but this is less than 0.7% of a population greater than 1 billion. Similar situations exist in Thailand (755,000; 2.15%), Brazil (540,000; 0.57%), Myanmar (530,000; 2%); China (500,000; <0.07%), United States.
