+RRank -- refers to the relative rank of the country in terms of the prevalence of AIDS with respect to the adult population.
#Since 1999, more than 500,000 people have been added to South Africa's population living with HIV/AIDS, bringing the total to almost 5 million PLWHA.
*Ethiopia, located in the "Horn of Africa", is not usually considered as part of Sub-Saharan Africa but included in the table because it shares cultural, economic and socio-political ties with a number of its border countries in Sub-Saharan Africa that are also most affected by AIDS.
Only a few other countries, like Haiti, Cambodia (see Countries (Worldwide) most affected by HIV/AIDS) have HIV/AIDS prevalence comparable to those found in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Other large countries have high absolute numbers of people living with HIV/ AIDS (PLWHA) but as a relative % of population, the prevalence is still "relatively low" in these countries compared to those in Sub-Saharan Africa. India, for exampple, has almost 3.7 million PLWHA but this is less than 0.7% of a population greater than 1 billion. Similar situations exist in Thailand (755,000; 2.15%), Brazil (540,000; 0.57%), Myanmar (530,000; 2%); China (500,000; <0.07%), United States.
