"Dinosaurs" trigger in our imagination images of ferocious flesh-eating giant monsters.
And yet, the child within everyone of us, who is afraid of monsters and "creatures of the dark", is hypnotized, at the same time, to explore the world of these extinct animals that once ruled the earth.
There is no young person in modern society today who has not heard of Tyrannosaurus rex, considered the "fiercest dinosaur" of them all.
This Dinosaurs section attempts to integrate many of the resources about dinosaurs that are found in the internet -- to guide you in answering many fascinating questions, as well dispel myths and misconceptions, about dinosaurs.
- What is the largest flesh-eating dinosaur discovered, so far?
- What is the largest dinosaur discovered, so far? Were they the largest animals that ever existed?
- Why did these ancient rulers of the earth disappear?
- What are the evolutionary descendants of the dinosaurs?
Because they are extinct, our knowledge of dinosaurs come mainly from "scientific reconstructions" based from incomplete body fragments and footprints of dinosaurs found in fossil records. It is quite possible therefore that the perceived "appearance and behavior" of a dinosaur species, e.g., T. rex, may change as more fossil parts of a species and nature of its environment are discovered.
While those that we call "dinosaurs" are extinct, there are evolutionary descendants of the dinosaurs that co-exist with us today. [Can you name them?] In fact, many paleontologists consider these evolutionary descendants as "modern dinosaurs".
The Dinosaurs section is included in the Ecosystems website to emphasize the role of the environment in deciding the fate of living organisms. The subsections being developed include:
- Dino Timeline
Journey through time and explore the world of the dinosaurs at various ages and regions of the earth.
- Types & Classification
Use the A-Z navigation links above, to become familiar with currently known species of dinosaurs; or explore the different classifications (taxonomy or systematics) to better understand how the various dinosaurs are evolutionary related with each other.
- Dino Myths & Misconceptions
For example, contrary to popular belief, perpetuated in motion pictures and fiction books, the direct ancestors of modern man have not co-existed with the dinosaurs. Also, there are likely to be more plant-eating rather than meat-eating dinosaurs and perhaps many of them are small rather than the giants that attract our attention. Many species of animals that lived during the age of the dinosaurs are not all dinosaurs, although some are distantly related to the dinosaurs.
- Museums & Galleries
Some of the best "museums and galleries" featuring dinosaurs may not be near you or may exist only as "virtual museums", because many museums do not have enough space to display all their collections.
- Photogalleries
This section will attempt to integrate the photo-collection, by species, from the different museums and galleries around the world. Artists renditions of dinosaurs are included here also, but bear in mind that some of these artistic interpretations may not be anatomically precise.
- Do you know your Dinos?
Dino Quiz: Test your knowledge about dinosaurs.
- Links
Include links to museums and galleries, as well as other resources found in the internet. There are many good internet sites exploring the world of the dinosaurs. However, many of them are included only in this section, rather than linked in other pages of this website, because of our policy to focus only on "stable sites", as well as avoid sites that tend to commercialize information.
