  • Blood-brain Barrier: SFAF
a barrier between the blood vessels and the brain that is selectively permeable, i.e., allows only certain substances to pass through. Many drugs do not cross the blood-brain barrier and therefore cannot be used to treat infections within the central nervous system. A similar barrier between the circulating blood and the cerebrospinal fluid is known as the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier.
  • blood-brain barrier JAMA
A selective barrier (obstacle) between brain blood vessels and brain tissues whose effect is to restrict what may pass from the blood into the brain. Certain compounds readily cross the blood-brain barrier; others are completely blocked.
