  • Antioxidant: SFAF
a substance that inhibits the oxidation reaction by binding with and neutralizing free radicals and other highly reactive molecules, thus reducing oxidative damage. Some antioxidants (e.g., superoxide dismutase) are produced by the body to neutralize reactive molecules formed during cellular metabolism and to fight invading microorganisms. Adding antioxidants to the diet (e.g., beta carotene, vitamin E, selenium) may help prevent oxidative stress due to an inadequate cellular supply.
