We have many dreams planned for Likas-Philippines, for the coming years. They will be realized only when there will be more volunteers to tackle specific projects.
The most immediate need at the moment include those are critical in the architecture of a dynamic and interactive website.
Webpage layout and design There are several thousand formatted files already in the existing Likas-Philippines website, and more that need to be formatted before they are ready for inclusion. Others, such as the community Calendars are still in conceptual stage.
All this efforts however will have limited impact if they do not appeal to visitors. This will require a presentable layout as well as features that will make the website more dynamic and interactive with visitors.
These initiatives require website and graphic designers, layout artists, as well as programmers who are well-versed with PHP-MySQL to systematize and convert the current static files into dynamic files and databases.
There are needs also for writers, journalists, communication majors to help edit and improve text presentation.
Installation of GetWiki We plan to convert to the "Wiki" concept of creating websites. This concept was pioneered by Wikipedia, wherein anyone in the world may participate in creating a file. It has since been modified by other groups to solve the perceived limitations of original Wikepedia.
The closest version that will be suitable for Likas-Philippines and Treasures of the Internet would be "GetWiki". However, unlike the current GetWiki, the layout of both websites will be more "rich" rather than plain, and will incorporate as many pictures and works of art, as is possible, not only to entice visitors with the beauty of the images but more important, to aid in the educational goals of Likas-Philippines and Treasures of the Internet.
This initiative requires programmer-website designer collaborations, first to install and debug the GetWiki program, and then create a presentable web layout.
Directories This will be comprehensive directories of Philippine government institutions (national, regional and local), embassies, organizations (in the Philippines and abroad), businesses, tourist related businesses (hotels, travel agencies, airlines, etc.) and directories related to the main topics shown on the top left side. The commercial directories will be included through a link in the ".com" component of "Treasures of the Internet" featuring the Philippines, to keep "Likas-Philippines" devoid of sites that may violate the no-ads policy.
This is a component of the planned projects where everyone can help very easily. It would be as simple as sending an email or calling by phone to ask every organization, businesses, government institutions to register for inclusion in the directories. There will be a need for volunteer "community leaders" to help administer each of the directories, to ensure that they are accurate and up-to-date, as well as meet the strict guidelines for inclusion in the Likas-Philippines directories.
This initiative will have a need also for savvy computer programmers (e.g., PHP-MySQL skills) to select and adapt existing open-source directory softwares that will meet the needs of the Likas-Philippines directories.
There will be a need also for webdesigners to create appealing format for the Likas-Philippines directories.
Photodatabase and Photo Presentation This initiative does not intend to copy or compete with photodatabases like flickr.com. Likas-Philippines and Treasures of the Internet does not have any plans whatsoever to set up any such similar business plan.
Instead, this will be a repository of the best photos and arts, with accompanying text, to create photo-documentaries for the various page files of the various sections of Likas-Philippines.
Here, the simplest way to help will be to contribute your best photos, and to help locate photos that will meet the criteria for possible inclusion in the Likas-Philippines photodatabase. Please visit a separate link of Ang Pilipinas Ngayon for an outline of some ideas on how you may help in creating the Likas-Philippines database.
There will be a needed for writers also to create the accompanying text or article for the photo-essays.
There are rules and guidelines about submissions, please read these before submitting any photo, or work of art.
Ang Pilipinas Ngayon This is a planned online magazine about the Philippines and Filipino people. Please visit a separate link of Ang Pilipinas Ngayon for an outline of this initiative.
This is a project that can be started immediately, if there are enough volunteers who will help initiate it.
Likas-Philippines Community Calendars This project and the Community Voices initiative below, are key components of the community empowerment goals of Likas-Philippines. Please go to the top left of this page, for the general "regional community Calendars"
As stated in the "New Volunteers of Likas-Philippines Team", Raymond Chua Sing, a Filipino programmer has volunteered to do a radical revision of the multi-level Calendar of Treasures of the Internet. [Please visit the Likas-Philippines Team section and find "About Raymond" to find out more about this project.] However, it may take awhile before the new community Calendars will be available.
The fastest way to implement an interim "Likas-Philippines Community Calendars" is to use the same multi-level Calendar software currently used by Treasures of the Internet. It is a licensed software, $50 per license.
It should be cheap enough for me to buy this. However, as a matter of principle, to foster the goal that "Likas-Philippines" is a truly "Bayanihan" effort, I am hoping for a Filipino to donate the fund needed to purchase the license. [Maybe one of the more "madatong Filipinos" living in the United States, or anywhere abroad. Or, perhaps, even "kapal-muks", who claim to be one of the more vested members of the Filipino elite?]
This is a project that will be of benefit for everyone
